In late December, the Illinois
Department of Insurance issued a warning to all
consumers regarding a scam seemingly
targeting all residents.
It seems some residents have received
letters, printed on fake Department (of Insurance)
letterhead, advising recipients that their
"automobile policy is cancelled," and that their
"Driver's License and/or License Plates will be
suspended within 10 days from receipt of the
letter."
Such letters are fraudulent and were not
generated by the Department. The source of
the letters is under investigation.
The press release went on to state that the
Department does not maintain "insurance records"
on individual consumers and would never send
unsolicited letters, faxes, or emails asking
consumers for proof of insurance or other personal
information. They also do not have the
authority to suspend any individual's Driver's
License or License Plate.
